The New South Korean president is......

December 19 was election day in South Korea. The polls were open from 6am to 6pm KST.

The new President is Park Geun-hye. She is the first woman President in South Korea. She received 51.6% of the vote. Moon Jae-in received 48% of the votes.

The voter turnout was 75.8% which was the highest turnout in the past 15 years. The voter turnout in 1997 was 80.7%. The turnout of the last election in 2007 was 63%.

The new President takes office on Febuary 25, 2013 for a 5 year term.

Thinking about Korea

I am always thinking of new ideas for my visit in 2014. I have so many ideas and I know I'll have to trim that list down a lot. Its going to be so hard to make the list shorter because there are so many wonderful things about Korea. My trip will mostly focus on Seoul. I won't have much time to do a lot of traveling around the country. If I could take a month of vacation then I'd definitely visit all 8 provinces. A month of vacation isn't realistic! I wish I could go every year, but international flights are very expensive!

I hope my trip becomes a reality. I still have a at least a year to plan this trip. I wish the airfare wasn't so expensive. Hopefully I'll have a good job and be able to afford the trip.

I miss Korea so much. I have so many memories. My time there was a real adventure. I know I complained a lot on my blog, but that was all related to my job. It was a good job most of the time. Sometimes it was really frustrating. I fell in love with the country, the culture, the dramas, and music. I also discovered that I was into Korean men.

I feel like I wasted so much time. I didn't use my time there to the fullest. There were so many things that I didn't get to see and places I didn't get to visit. I should have been out doing something every weekend, but sometimes all I wanted to do was relax and sleep in.

I don't understand why I didn't buy a video camera while I was there. I had plenty of money. I did blog everyday, but a video is more entertaining. I could have had tons of footage for my YouTube channel and I wouldn't have to try to fit in a year's worth of filming in a one week trip. I don't get a ton of views to my channel but making videos makes me happy. My video making desire didn't start until after I returned from Korea. I took a few videos while I was there in 2011, but I don't know why I didn't make more. Maybe it was because I was so miserable on my last trip.

Korean Presidential TV Ads

I wonder if Koreans ever have the ads where they bash the other candidate like we do in the USA. Anyway these ads look very tame. I wish I could understand what they said. I should have studied Korean harder!

There are now 2 candidates: Park Geun Hye and Moon Jae In.

South Korea welcomed their 10 millionth visitor

Read the story here: http://nwww.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20121121000877

South Korea welcomed their 10 millionth visitor in 2012 on November 21. This is the first time Korea had 10 million visitors in a single year. They hope to have 11.3 million visitors by the end of the year.

South Korea's new goal is to have 20 million visitors by 2020.

70% of visitors come to Seoul. They want to expand travel programs so more people will visit other areas of the country.

40% of visitors return to Korea for another visit.

___________________________

I definitely recommend South Korea as a great travel destination. It's probably the only country that I will revisit since international travel is so expensive. Korea will always hold a special place in my heart.

South Korea is a very safe place. I never worried about my safety. They have a low crime rate and guns are illegal. The funny thing is that you rarely see the police out and about. When there is a protest they come out by the hundreds in tour buses.

Forget about personal space. Its not a concept in Korea. If you go to one of the bigger cities like Seoul it will be crowded and they will bump into you and keep going. Don't expect anyone to say "sorry". If you get on the subway during rush hour expect to be packed like sardines!! Watch out for scooters on the sidewalk!

South Korea is a mixture of modern and traditional. They have a lot of modern buildings and skyscrapers, but there are a lot of traditional buildings from the past.

There are so many things to do! Most of the tourist attractions are very cheap also. Most of the palaces only cost 1000 won which is about $1.00. The zoo only cost 3000 won which is about $3.00. You can go to a horse race for about $1.00. The amusement parks are more expensive, but worth the visit.

If you want some suggestions visit my "Things to Do and See" label on the left hand side of my blog. Almost all of my attractions were in Seoul.

There are a lot of shopping districts where you can pick up nice souvenirs.

Transportation is cheap and efficient! The subway system is very easy to navigate.

The food is great and not very expensive. If you are shy about trying new food there are fast food restaurants such as McDonalds, Burger King, and KFC.

Holidays on the 14th of each month...

There is an unofficial holiday on the 14th of every month in South Korea. These holidays are mostly celebrated by couples.

Here are all the holidays which fall on the 14th of the month:

January 14: Diary Day

  • Couples exchange blank diaries so they can share what happened during the year.

February 14th: Valentine's Day
  • Valentine's day is celebrated differently in South Korea. The women are give gifts to men that they are dating or interested in.

March 14th: White Day
  • This is when the men reciprocate for Valentine's day. The men give gifts to women.

April 14th: Black Day
  • This would be "singles awareness day". The singles get together and eat black noodles (jjangjangmyeon).

May 14th: Rose Day
  • On this day couples exchange roses.

June 14th: Kiss Day
  • I think you can guess what happens on this day :)

July 14th: Silver Day
  • Exchange silver accessories on this day.

August 14th: Green Day
  • Couples get out and enjoy nature while singles drown their sorrows by drinking a lot of soju.

September 14th: Photo Day
  • Couples take pictures together in a romantic setting and place the photo somewhere they can look at it.

October 14th: Wine Day
  • Couples get together and drink wine.

November 14th: Movie Day
  • This is a day when couples go to the movies together.

December 14th: Hug Day
  • This is a day to give hugs.

Valentine's Day, White Day and Black Day are the most popular holidays among couples and singles.

I don't know how popular the other "holidays" are because I never really heard anyone mention any of them to me.They weren't promoted like Valentine's Day and White Day. Around those days you see advertisements and special displays of gifts all over the place.

Press the CC button for English subtitles!

John Park was on American Idol and he also was the runner up of Superstar K2.

The song "Childlike" will be on the OST of the movie "Wolf Boy". I've also seen the movie title written as "A Werewolf Boy". The movie will come out in South Korea on October 31, 2012.

The basic plot is: a young girl finds a feral boy in her yard, she tries to "civilize" him and they fall in love.

South Korea's 2012 Presidential Race

In 2012, South Korea is also having an election for President. There are 3 main candidates.

The election will be held on December 19th, 2012. This will be the 18th election. The winner will be determined in the first-past-the-post system, meaning that there will be a single round of voting and the candidate receiving the highest number of votes will be elected

  • You have to be 19 years old to vote in South Korea.

  • Presidents can only serve one 5 year term. The current President, Lee Myung-bak, leaves office in Febuary of 2013.

Park Guen-hye is running for the Saenuri party (also known as the New Frontier Party). She is a member of the National Assembly. Her father was President of South Korea from 1963 to 1979.

  • The Saenuri party is conservative on social issues; in the last election the president called homosexuality "abnormal" and opposed any legal recognition of same-sex couples.Saenuri has been very active in promoting the North Korean Human Rights Law, which, if passed, would officially condemn the use of torture, public executions and other human rights violations in North Korea

Moon Jae-in is running for the Democratic United Party (DUP). He is a human rights lawyer.

  • The Democratic United Party (DUP) is a liberal political party in South Korea. The party supports greater human rights, improved relations with North Korea, and an economic policy described as “new progressivism.”
Ahn Chul-soo is running as an independent third candidate. He is a doctor and software entrepreneur.

Naul is the lead vocalist and founder of the group Brown Eyed Soul (Korean R&B). The song title translates to "Wind Memory". The song is from the album "Principle Of My Soul" released on 9/20/12. This is Naul's first solo album.

For S. Korean men, makeup a foundation for success

read the article here:  http://news.yahoo.com/korean-men-makeup-foundation-success-051134289.html

The article calls South Korea the male makeup capital of the world. Last year Korean men spent $495.5 million on skincare which is about 21 percent of the global sales. Makeup has become popular among men because appearance is really important in South Korea.
--------------------------

When I lived in Korea I didn't know that men wore makeup. I would think it would be popular among pop stars, but I didn't know the general population was interested in makeup. I don't think this trend will ever become popular in America. Most men in America are more focused on being macho.

Dance Tutorial: Psy "Gangnam Style"

Do you want to learn the dance from "Gangnam Style"? Here's a tutorial from the arirangworld YouTube site.

Psy was signed to a label in the USA!

Psy was signed to a label by Scooter Braun. Scooter manages several artists such as Justin Beiber and Carly Rae Jepson. He has 2 labels: Schoolboy Records and Raymond-Braun Media Group.

Psy is popular in Korea and now he has the opportunity to make it big in the US. I think it's great. He has already received a ton of publicity in the US because "Gangnam Style" was being shown on many media outlets. As of today, September 5, "Gangnam Style" has received over 100 million views!
Here's the announcement from Psy's official YouTube channel:

Music Video: Phantom "Burning"

I'm not really familiar with Phantom's music, but I like their sound. I posted a video in an earlier post for their "Hole in Your Face" which was released in Nov 2011. Link: Hole In Your Face MV

They are a hip hop group, but this is their debut into K-pop. This song is from their first mini-album titled 'Phantom City'.

Korean Holiday: August 15 (Liberation Day)

On August 15th Koreans celebrate 'Gwangbokjeol' or Liberation Day. It is a public holiday that marks the liberation from Japanese colonial rule.

A ceremony led by the president is held at a history museum in Cheonan, The Independance Hall of Korea, or Sejong Center. The Independance song (광복절 노래) is sung at the ceremony.

The Korean flag (태극기) is raised in honor of those who fought for Korea's freedom.

The government also issues pardons on this day.

Music Video: Psy (feat Hyuna) "오빤 딱 내 스타일" (Oppa Is Just My Style)

Psy joined Twitter. @psy_oppa

This is the girl version of "Gangnam Style". "Oppa Is Just My Style"

I liked the first one better. Sequels are never as good as the original. The 2nd video isn't funny like the 1st one. The first video had so much appeal because it was funny. Most non Koreans probably didn't have a clue what the song was really about, but they could all laugh at the funny parts. I read a lot of the comments and most of them say Hyun-a ruined the song. Her voice sounds really childish and doesn't really fit with the song. Maybe she is trying to be 'aegyo' (acting cute and childish) which is really popular in Korea. I don't like 'aegyo' because its not a part of my culture. I don't think American men would respond well to 'aegyo', but I think Korean men love it. I'd give the first one 5 stars. This one gets 2.5 stars.

London Olympics 2012: IOC doesn't want South Korean to accept bronze medal

Read about it here: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/olympics-fourth-place-medal/ioc-says-south-korean-player-t-accept-bronze-145955541--oly.html

The IOC doesn't want Jongwoo Park to accept the bronze medal for men's soccer because he held up a sign with a political statement. Athletes are banned from making political statements.

South Korea won the soccer game against Japan. Park held up a sign that said "Dokdo is our land".

South Korea and Japan each claim to own this piece of land in between South Korea and Japan. South Korea calls the islets Dokdo. Japan calls the islets Takeshima. Both countries are passionate about saying they own the islands.

When I was in Korea I would hear Koreans talking about Dokdo. A few years ago they even had an event in New York City where they gave out bracelets that said that Dokdo belongs to Korea. I think it will be a never ending feud between the 2 countries.

Music Video: EvoL "We are a bit different"

EvoL (Effective Voice of Ladies) is a new girl group in South Korea. I thought they would release "Magnet" first since they released the most teasers for that video.

Evol’s 1st Mini Album (Let Me Explode/Blow It Up)
Tracklist
1. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
2. I'm Sorry
3. Magnet
4. We're a Bit Different
5. Let Me Explode (Blow it up)

I've seen the lyrics and they don't really have anything to do with the video. The concept and the lyrics don't really match up. I kept wondering how the "we're a bit different" fit in with the song, but then they had one line where they said it. The song mostly talks about being on the dance floor, but there's no dance floor in the video.

The teaser for "Magnet" looks a lot like the "We are a Bit Different" video. Check it out:

They really are teasing us. Another teaser for "Let Me Explode" shows the same scenes:

PSY's "Gangnam Style" gets international attention

Korean music is going to take over the world!! or PSY is taking over the world!!

Today YouTube trends wrote an article about Psy's "Gangnam Style". Link: http://youtube-trends.blogspot.com/2012/08/gangnam-style-is-your-international-hit.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+youtube-trends+%28YouTube+Trends%29

They are calling it the international hit of the month. I thought it was funny that they described the video as "off the wall". I agree. Most things in South Korea are off the wall to me. I lived in South Korea and its a quirky place! (And I loved every minute of it!)

The video is number 3 on YouTube's music video charts. The video has over 18,000,000 views in less than a month!! The video was released on July 15, 2012.

I watched the video last week..It is so funny!

The video is getting a lot of recognition in the USA on TV, Social Media and comments from celebrities.

I follow Josh Groban on Facebook. I was surprised to see him post the link to "Gangnam Style" on his timeline one day.

On July 29th The US rapper T-Pain @TPAIN tweeted about "Gangnam Style". He said  "Words cannot even describe how amazing this video is.." He also posted lyrics on 2 other dates.

CNN aired the video on live television on August 2nd.

In case you're wondering--Gangnam is an affluent neighborhood in Seoul, South Korea. The video is about PSY looking for his ideal girl.

South Korean weightlifter dislocates elbow at London Olympics

Read about it here: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/olympics-fourth-place-medal/weightlifter-sa-jae-hyouk-dislocates-elbow-london-olympics-083825819--oly.html

Ouch. I would never try to lift double my body weight. I wouldn't even try to lift half of my body weight! I guess I will never understand the appeal of weightlifting.

Read about it here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/skorea-claims-world-records-in-mens-archery-at-london-games/2012/07/27/gJQAevWMDX_story.html

A legally blind archer from South Korea has already set a world record at the London Olympics. Im Dong-hyun broke his own record with a score of 699. He set the previous record in May in Turkey.

Im Dong-hyun has 10 percent vision in his left eye and 20 percent in his right. He does not wear glasses for the event. He relies on the differences between colors on the target.

I think that is a great accomplishment. He is an example of how you shouldn't let a disability keep you from achieving your dream. It's amazing when someone with limited vision can triumph over other athletes with better eyesight!!

Korea's Got Talent 2 Finals!!! (July 2012)

There are 7 great acts! The judges had a hard decision!

PID

Morning of Owl-모닝오브아울

Great performance. I like their outfits.

Khan and Moon-칸앤문----2ND PLACE!!

Great job! Very creative!

Team Champion- 챔피언

They did a good job, but the other dancers did better.

안세권

I like this song. I liked the way he had backup singers in the boxes. I think he did a good job.

BWB------WINNER!!

They are really good. That must take a lot of practice to always be in sync with each other.

Animation Crew- 애니메이션크루----3RD PLACE!!

This is neat. It reminds me of a reenactment in a museum. I wish I knew what the storyline was about.

My 2 favorites won 1st and 2nd place! All the winners were dancers. It was a good season with a lot of talent.

The Top 7 are:

P.I.D

챔피언

Korea's Got Talent2 Ep. 10 Semi-Finals Day 3

3rd night of the Semi-Finals. One of my favorites didn't make it to the Semi-Finals. My favorites from this round: Let's Dance, Khan and Moon, Morning of Owl.

There are so many dancers this year! It's hard for me to pick who I like best! BWB and Khan and Moon are my top picks for the finals.

Ground Jam- 그라운드 잼

They aren't as good as some other dancers, but I like it.

Let's Dance- 렛츠댄스

I like this style of dance. They are good.

Originality Khan and Moon- 칸앤문

I like Khan and Moon. They have been one of my favorites since the beginning. Khan is cute. I think they will make it to the next round.

Solists - 솔리스츠

I liked their performance. I think they did a good job.

Dong-ha Han

I don't really know what is going on.  Why is everyone so amused by this?

Se-kwon Ahn - 안세권

I think he did a good job. I like the choir in the background. I think he can make it to the next round.

Morning of owl- 모닝오브아울

Their performance was really good. I really liked the opening. I also like the suits. I think they had the best act of the night.I think they can make it to the next round.

Who do you like from this round? Who do you think will make it to the next round?

Korea's Got Talent2 Ep. 9 Semi-final Day 2

2nd night of the Semi-finals. No subtitles. I wish I knew what the judges were saying. My favorite: BWB

The Gate - 더게이트

I liked their performance.

500-20

I don't know what is going on in this act.

Selfish - 셀피시

Selfish was one of my favorites. I think he should have chose another song. I know English isn't his first language, but if you aren't familiar with the song you might not understand some of what he sang. If you are going to present a foreign song then you need to be spot on.

BWB

These guys are one of my favorites. They are really good and in sync with each other. That takes a lot of skill and practice. I think they can definitely go to the next round! They could even win.

Hwan-Lee

I didn't really like tonight's performance.

V.Star

Animation Crew- 애니메이션 크루

Who do you like from this round? Who do you think will make it to the finals?

Min-Ji Yoo - 유민지

JS Body - JS바디

They did a good job.

Hyung-bin Lim - 임형빈

I liked the first part, but not the 2nd part.

X-Fever - 엑스-피버

I don't really like their style of dance.

Jae-hwan Kim -김재환

I like his perfomance, except for the kazoo.

PID

I didn't really like this.

Who did you like from this round? Who do you think will make it to the next round?

Official Korean cheering song for London Olympics 2012

PSY (싸이) - Korea (코리아)

I love that Korea likes to have songs to cheer on their teams. Psy wrote this years cheering song for the London Olympics. He also wrote a songs in the past.

I think this is great and it would be cool if the USA had a cheering song!

Hopefully I'll keep up with the Olympics and post any Korean results!

Movie Trailer: R2B:리턴투베이스 (R2B: Return To Base)

R2B:Return to Base is a Korean movie that will be released on August 15, 2012. I like Rain (bi) and he stars in the film. The movie is a remake of Red Scarf (1963). The main roles are played by Rain (Jung Ji hoon) and Shin Se-Kyung. Jung Ji Hoon plays the role of  Tae-Yoon (fighter pilot). Shin Se-Kyung plays the role of Se-Young (mechanic). Other actors in the movie are: Yu Jun-Sang, Lee Ha-Na, Kim Sung-Su, Lee Jong-Suk, and Jung Suk-Won.

Plot:

Tae-hun is an Air Force pilot who is transferred to a combat flying unit after a dangerous air show demonstration. On the first day he meets Cheol-hui, the unit's top gun. Cheol-hui follows the rules, but Tae-hun is more free-spirited which causes conflict between them. Tae-hun becomes friends with his other colleagues. He falls in love with Se-young who is a mechanic. Tae-hun continues to be free-spirited and gets suspended. During a mission Dae-seo dies and Seok-hyeon disappears. Tae-hun blames Cheol-hui for the tragedy, but they eventually come to an understanding. Then they try to stop the war and rescue their missing comrade.

UPDATE March 31, 2013: The DVD was released in the USA under the name "Black Eagle" in March of 2013. The DVD has English subtitles. (I've added this to my Netflix list, but it hasn't been released on Netflix yet)

Toilet theme park in Korea

Korea is a fascinating place. I think I just found a new stop to add to my Korea trip in 2014.

Read about here:http://en.rocketnews24.com/2012/07/12/toilet-theme-park-opened-in-korea-there-is-a-rational-explanation-for-this/

Korea has the world's first toilet theme park. The "The Restroom Cultural Park" opened on July 4th in Suwon.

The park was built to honor the recently deceased mayor who was known as "Mr. Toilet". His mission was to improve the conditions of toilets in Korea. He had a toilet shaped house in Suwon which was donated to the city after his passing.

After "Mr. Toilet" died citzens donated money to build the toilet themed park. The park has various toilet exhibits and fun facts about poop.

Audio Teaser: EvoL (이블) "Magnet"

This teaser was in my YouTube subscription list so I decided to listen to it. I really like it.

EvoL is a girl group that will debut in August. I don't have much information about the group yet since they haven't debuted. They are represented by Stardom Entertainment. Stardom also represents Block B. Some people are saying that EvoL is the femaile version of BlockB.

Clips from Korea's Got Talent2 Ep. 7 Collaborations (July 2012)

I picked out my favorite performances. I'm ready to see who will make it to the top 21. My favorites are: The little boy from the 4th video, all the dancers from the 3rd video.

The second chance! "Bi-Bim-Bap" -비빔밥

They gave them a 2nd chance, but it doesn't look good when you have to look down at the lyrics. I think the cute singer ruined his chance.

Korean traditional music reborn! -한쿠스틱(English Subs)

I enjoyed this performance!

Best meets the Best -5 elements (English Subs)

I liked this performance. They are really talented. They put all the best dancers together and it was great! That one guy is so flexible.

No limits in Singing! "Seven Gates" -세븐게이츠 (English Subs)

I enjoyed this performance.

Clips from Korea's Got Talent2 Ep. 6 Talent Week results

These aren't all the results. I chose my favorites.

Singing Group A-Pop Vocal

I like the little boy who was coughing in his first audition. (he made it through)

Singing Group B-Singers with instruments

Singing Group C-Classic, Musical

Dance Group D-Solo Dance (English Subs)

The first boy was so cute, but he didn't make it. I think he could still be a pop star someday! The guy in the blue silk suit did a good job. (he made it)

Dance Group E-Small Group (English Subs)

Khan is cute and a good dancer.(they made it) BWB also did a good job, but I liked their other performance better.(they made it)

Clips from Korea’s Got Talent2 ep. 6 (July 2012) Collaborations

This week they had to collaborate with others.

One team from the beginning - 소울하모나이즈 (English Subs)

This group is made up of “Solists” and “Morning of Owl”. B-boy meets acappella. They named their group “Soul Harmonize”. I think its very interesting.

Vocal Trios! "Bella voce" -벨라보체

The middle guy reminds me of Joel Osteen. haha. I wish this on had subs. I want to know what they are saying because it seems like the one guy is having a hard time agreeing on a song.

Collaboration performance "Bi-Bim-Bap" - 비빔밥

I wonder what the outcome will be from this performance. The cute guy messed it up. He might have lost his chance. They were having trouble in all the practices. I think they should have picked another song.  I would be upset if he ruined my chance.

Dancers

Magicians

Vocalists

Big group Dance

Clips from Korea's Got Talent 2 Episode 5 (June 2012)

I need to study Korean more! I hate not knowing what is going on.

Take me! "Eui-sung Choi" - 최의성-He has a nice voice. He is also very handsome!

Next world star "Mo-se Do" -도모세-I can tell that Rain (bi) is his influence. He looks similar. He could be a Bi impersonator if he was as good, but I don’t think he compares. I wish it had subtitles!

Please say YES! "Yoo-chan Kim" – 김유찬 (English subs)-He is so cute! He could pass as a girl in that outfit!

A Cappella group "Solists" – 솔리스츠 (English Subs)-I enjoyed their performance

Robot maker to launch ‘K-pop star robots’

Read about it here: http://view.koreaherald.com/kh/view.php?ud=20120625000681

I think Koreans like robots. In 2009 they proposed English teaching robots. Now this year they want to make robots that can dance just like K-pop stars. What other kinds of robots will they come up with?

Dongbu Robot plans to make robots that will imitate pop stars by the end of this year. The robot will be controlled by artificial motor "joints". You can even make your robot look like the pop stars by attaching artificial skin.Users can download songs and dances to link to the robot.

More famous abroad, Morning of Owl - 모닝오브아울 (English Subs)--B-boys-they are very good!

South Korean Taxi Drivers Go on First Nationwide Strike

Read about it here: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-06-19/south-korean-taxi-drivers-go-on-first-nationwide-strike.html

The taxi drivers in Korea want the fares to be increased because fuel costs are rising. They also want to be able to switch to Diesel fuel. They are currently required to use Liquid Petroleum gas which has risen 245 won per liter since 2009.

The initial fees have been capped at 2400 won (@$2.00 usd) since 2009. The fees are 17% lower than the fees in New York City and 77% cheaper than Tokyo. (wow! 77%..remind me to never take a taxi in Tokyo!)I loved the cheap transportation in Korea. I can see how that would put stress on the cab drivers. Fuel prices keep going up, but their fares are staying the same. It's harder for them to make a profit.

Clips from Korea's Got Talent 2 Episode 3 (June 2012)

Poppin World Champion, Blue Whale Bros (BWB) (English Subs)--That was very interesting! I'm not into poppin, but I enjoyed their performance.

Seafood Magician, "Young-Jin Kim"김영진--Wow. He definately gets points for originality and creativity. Most magicians are predictable, but I've never seen anything like this.

"Selfish" who has Adam Levine's voice-셀피시--He has a nice voice, but I wouldn't compare him to Adam Levine.

Courageous father's song! "Duk-Hyun Cho"-조덕현 (English subs)--This man is in a bad situation and he wants to sing one more time. He's a self taught singer. I think he does a good job.

Geniuses from Busan----I love watching kids perform!

Hightlights from my stay in South Korea

I made a video of pictures from the time I spent in Korea. I wanted to make a video for my fundraising page and to share on my blog. I made a similar video after my first stay in Korea. I decided to add more pictures and make it shorter (under 5 minutes!).

I hope you enjoy the video!

Would you like to help me visit Korea in 2014?

Do you enjoy my blog? Would you like to see a lot of new content? Would you like to help me go back to Korea in 2014 to produce new blogs and videos?

I want to have new content on my blog, but its really hard when I'm not there. I've thought about quitting my blog, but this is my passion!! I want to be there so bad, but teaching is not for me. I don't have any other special skills to be able to work and live in Korea. I can't afford to stay there for an extending time to travel around. (Maybe I can find a Korean man and get married. hehe).

I am planning a trip to Korea in 2014. I'd like to go between April and October. The date will depend on when I can get vacation time and finding the best prices for flights. While I am there I also plan to do a lot of sightseeing. I am going to have a packed schedule to accomplish the things on my list. I have already started making a long list of ideas. I'm going to make a lot of new content for my YouTube channel and this blog.

I'm trying to raise funds for the trip through a site called Go Fund Me. http://www.gofundme.com/ The site uses crowdfunding to raise money for all sorts of causes. I had never heard of crowdfunding until I saw a segment on TV about someone raising money for medical expenses. I checked out the site and thought "what have I got to lose?" You sign up for an account, make a page telling why you need money, share your link, and people send donations.

I don't have any donations yet. I hope to raise $1900 for my trip. That will cover all my expenses.

I have included a widget on the right hand side of my page if anyone would like to donate. ANY amount is appreciated.

Here is the link to my site: Valerie's Korea Trip in 2014

Even if you can't donate, Can you share my link on your twitter, blog, facebook, etc?

Also I would love to receive suggestions for what YOU would like for me to do while I am in Korea. I will probably be in Seoul 90% of my trip. What would you like for me to blog/make videos about? I have a lot of  ideas, but I also want to know what people want to see on my blog.

Give me some suggestions!

Clips from Korea's Got Talent2 (Episode 2) June 2012

Ssireum Paul Potts, "Se-gwon Ahn" -안세권--(English Subs)---The title of the video compares him to Paul Potts. He has a great voice! He used to be a wrestler, but quit when he broke his leg. His family isn't doing good financially so he hopes this show will help him. If he keeps performing like he did on this episode I could see him doing well on this show.

Guitar Player, "Pilos" -필로스 (English Subs) This is a brother and sister, ages 16 and 17, who play guitar. They quit school to focus on playing the guitar. They are good guitar players! I enjoyed their performance. I think they will do well on the show.

Min-soo Kim & Sung-gwon Hong - 김민수&홍성권----hilarious!!

I'm good at anything! "Min-woo Hwang" -  황민우------so cute! He's 7 years old. Future K-pop star?

SingaSong writer, "Il-joon Seo" - 서일준--I wish this one had subs! I'd really like to know what he is saying! I'm guessing that the judges give him a word and he has to sing about it. His words were Incheon airport, Spring, and car. haha. I just wish I knew what he said about those! Maybe I'll try putting it into a translating program. The audience was laughing a lot so I'm guessing whatever he said was funny!!

Clips from Korea's Got Talent 2 Episode 1 (June 2012)

I am so excited that Korea's Got Talent is back for a 2nd season! (코리아갓탤런트2)  I wish I were in Korea to see the entire show on TV or a live performance. I am in the USA so I'm watching clips from YouTube and sharing my thoughts for my readers. I'll pick out a few of my favorites and throw in some bad ones.

I'm glad that they subbed a few videos in English. I'm also glad that they post the videos quickly. (The show aired about 5 hours ago and the videos are already up!!)

'오리지날리티 칸앤문' 락킹댄스! Khan and Moon. "Locking Dance" (English subs). I like their dance and Khan is really handsome.

'김상식' 인내하면 놀라운 작품이 탄생! This one is really awesome. The best part comes at the end of his performance. It will be interesting to see what he comes up with next. (English Subs)

'김영후' 소심남고딩의 파워댄스! This is cute. A guy dancing to various Kpop songs.

'박병현' 김구라님이시여 저에게 독설을! What is this? He got 3 'x'.

'전현상' Listen---He has a good voice. His English is good. Could this be a standout performer on this season? He shared his story, but I couldn't understand what they said.

(English Subs) The girl (김지혜)is a dancer with a hearing impairment. She can't hear the music, but she can feel the beats of the music. She made it to the next round. Her boyfriend also sings, but the clip ends during his performance.

Korea's Got Talent returns on June 1st

I love talent shows. America's Got Talent just started last week. Korea's Got Talent 2 begins on June 1st! Maybe I'll blog about this year. Those were some of my most popular posts last year! 10 days....I can't watch it live because I'm not in Korea, but I'll be checking the youtube channel. I like to pick out a few good clips and a few bad ones. I hope they have English subtitles this year.  I know a lot of people request them on the youtube channel.

An update...one year after leaving

It's been a little over a year since I left my last job in South Korea. April 25, 2012 was the one year mark of when I ran. I am in my hometown in the USA and I'm currently looking for a new job. I'm also trying to keep this blog updated as much as possible. I don't have any first hand accounts to share, but I like to share things that are going on in Korea.

When I left the school I was emailed 3 months later and told that they would pursue legal actions against me since I owed them half of the plane ticket. I didn't respond to that email. Since then I have not heard from the school.

I will not be returning to South Korea to teach in the future. It's too risky for me. Deep down I'd really love to go back, but I'm scared of ending up in a school I don't like. Plus I'm not that great of a teacher.

I do plan on visiting South Korea in 2014. There is a reason for this trip. Universal Studios Korea is set to open that year. I won't be going to the grand opening. I'll be going after its open for a few months.I have 2 years to save up for the very expensive trip.I really hope this trip will be a reality.

Lately I have been thinking about that trip so much. Its 2 years away, but I'm already thinking of places to go. I want to be able to come up with new content, pictures, and videos for my blog. I hope to make enough videos and posts to give this blog a revival for a few months in 2014. I'll probably post an entry a week including a video and the story to why and when I went to that particular place. I can also note how things have changed since I left. When I return I will have been away for 3 years. I have so many ideas. Its going to be an exciting trip and I hope I have at least a week to spend in Korea. I hope to be able to meet up with some old friends that I really miss while I am there.

Universal Studios resort in South Korea to open in 2014

Read about it here: Universal Studios to open in 2014

Highlights:

Universal Studios in South Korea is going to be bigger than all of the other parks combined. I've been to Universal Studios in Los Angeles, CA and Orlando, FL. I enjoyed both of those so I am excited to go to the one in South Korea. My favorite rides are Earthquake, ET and Shrek 4D.

They hope to attract 15 million tourists a year.

It will be located in the city of Hwaseong.

Construction is projected to start next year and open early 2014.

They expect the project to create 40,000 jobs. (I wonder if they would hire foreigners. I should look into that).

My Favorite Korean Music Videos and songs of 2011

I've been seeing some posts about the best and worst K-pop videos of 2011. So I thought I'd list my favorite videos of 2011 since I love K-pop and I followed it even though I was back in the states for most of the year. These aren't in any sort of order.

"Mona Lisa"-MBLAQ---I love the latin vibe, the usa shorts and the skirt. I also like the song.

"Love Song"-Big Bang--I like the song and I like the simplicity of the video.

"The Boys"-Girl's Generation--I like the opening with the rose petals.

"In Heaven"-JYJ its sad but has a plot instead of the band just singing

"Keep Your Head Down"-TVXQ--the dancing is great in this video. I like the song also.

___________________________________ I just like these songs...

"Hole in Your Face"-Phantom(Korean Hip Hop) (I like the song and I think they have a nice sound--not so crazy about the video)

"Bad"-Tablo (I'm not sure if he considered K-pop, but I like the song)
