Coming of Age Day (성년의날)

Coming of Age Day is held on the 3rd Monday of May. A ceremony is held for men and women who are turning 20 years old in the current year to celebrate their transition into adulthood.

In Korea adulthood begins at age 20. When you turn 20 you can drive, marry, vote, drink alcohol and smoke.

A few traditional ceremonies are held in South Korea on Coming of Age Day. Participants wear Hanbok (traditional Korean clothes). Men have their hair in a topknot and wear a hat called a "gat". Women put their hair in a bun and wear a ornamental hairpin known as "binyeo". Women also wear a hat known as a "jokduri".

Participants bow to the guests and take their first drink of alcohol.

Participants receive 3 gifts at the ceremony: flowers, perfume, and a kiss.
