Read the entire article here: http://english.chosun.com/site/data/html_dir/2014/09/24/2014092401005.html

14,427 people killed themselves in 2013 which comes to an average of 40 people per day.

There are 28.5 suicides per 100,000 people.

Last year suicide was the leading cause of death among people in their teens, 20's, and 30's. The rate is higher among men.

Korea's suicide rate is the highest in the OECD.

A total of 266,257 people died in Korea in 2013. The leading cause of death was cancer causing 28% of deaths. The other most common causes of death were: cerebrovascular diseases, cardiac disease, suicide, and diabetes.

It surprises me that diabetes is the 5th leading cause of death. You always hear how healthy Korean food is and how Koreans live more healthy lifestyles.

Child suicide in South Korea

read the article here: http://www.asianewsnet.net/S-Koreas-suicide-scourge-weighs-on-youth-50594.html

South Korea has the highest suicide rate in the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development).

I was shocked to find out that so many suicides happen among children. Last year a total of 139 children committed suicide. 88 of those were high school students. Its hard to believe that 51 children under the age of 15 committed suicide.

The rate has been declining since 2009. In 2009 there were 202 suicides among children. In 2011 the number dropped to 150 and 139 in 2012. South Korea still has the highest rate of suicide even though it is on the decline.

The most common reasons for suicide included family trouble, depression, study pressure, and relationship problems.
