My South Korea Bucket List

There are tons of things to do and see in South Korea. I'm always searching and reading about new experiences in Korea. Sometimes I discover new things because my friends have shared their experiences. I have compiled a list of things that I want to accomplish this time. I feel like I saw so much, but I left so much undone. Now I have to make up for all the things I never got around to doing. I will blog and vlog about each experience!

1. Visit the Blue House--this is where the president lives

2. Rail bikes

3. Visit Busan-the 2nd largest city in Korea

4. Ride the Sea Train

5. Visit the beach(es)

6. Visit some sites from a drama- I really wanted to visit the "Full House" set, but unfortunately it has been torn down. It was damaged by a typhoon.

7. Ride the bullet train

8. Try street food--I lived in Korea for over a year and I never tried street food! (tried Hotteok in Oct 2014)

9. Visit the royal tombs

10. Travel to Jeju Island-Jeju is like the Hawaii of Korea

11. Attend kpop concerts (especially Rain!)

12. stay at a love motel (I only stayed at one motel in Korea. I think it was a love motel, but I want to stay in a nice one)

13. Attend Seoul Tube--this is where vloggers meet in Seoul  (Did this June 2014)

14. Try Soju

15. Try Makgoli (did this at a friend's house in September 2014..didn't like it)

16. Go on the Han River Cruise (did this in August 2014)

17. Buy a Hanbok

18. Visit Toilet Museum (did this in October 2014)

19. Visit the poop cafe

20. Attend Club Night in Hongdae-I think its the 4th Friday of every month. You pay around $20 and you can visit all the clubs in Hongdae. I'm not a clubber, but I'd like to see it for myself without having to pay cover charges to every club.

21. Go back to Banpo Bridge (did this in October 2014)

22. Go to Nami Island

23. Visit the seoul national cemetery

24. Visit unesco heritage sites (already seen 3)

I got a job!

On March 11th I began communicating with a girl I met in a Facebook group for English teachers in South Korea. She was leaving her hagwon and searching for her replacement. She forwarded my resume to her boss and her boss wanted to interview me.

She had a positive experience with the school. She was there 3 years. She left and then came back recently to work part time. She is leaving because she is moving out of the country to get married.

I had an interview on March 25th at 2PM Korean time which was 1AM in the USA (EST). The interview started a few minutes late because they were having computer problems. Then once their computer issues were worked out they added me on skype and I called them on video chat.

The director of the school was busy so one of the co workers interviewed me. The teacher I am replacing was also there, but she didn't ask me anything. The co-worker only asked me a few questions. She seemed excited to be talking to me and she said I made a good first impression..

I will be working in Goyang at a small hagwon. The hagwon has been open for 7 years.

Today the teacher that I am replacing sent me a message saying that the director wants to hire me! That was a fast decision. I got notified approximately 24 hours after my interview.

I think this will be the best position for me. I will have small classes, freedom to choose the curriculum and plan my own lessons. There are about 100 students in the whole hagwon and there is one other foreign teacher. I'll have a few different classes like a monthly cooking class and a weekly art class. I'll also have a private one on one with an adult student. The other students will be elementary students. On MWF I will have 5-6 classes and 3-4 classes on Tues/Thurs. Classes are 45 minutes long. Working hours are 2-9:30 with classes beginning around 3pm. I would be teaching reading, speaking, phonics, cooking, and art. I'd be doing novel reading with the adult student.

I will be starting at the end of May.

Interview #2

I just finished with my 2nd interview. It was okay. It was a phone interview that lasted 10 mins. She asked me a few questions about my personality and my previous experience. Then I asked her a lot of questions about the school.

I'm not sure about this one. I don't really know if my experience would be well suited for this school. I have a preference for the 1st school.

The school that I interviewed with today is a large hagwon in Hanam with about 500 students. The school has been open for about 5 years. I prefer smaller hagwons because you have a better chance to get to know your students. At my 2nd hagwon I only had 50 students in all.

The max class size is 12 students. The curriculum and tests are already made and they are only tested once every 3 months. A pre-made lesson could be a good or bad thing. If the lessons are too short it would be hard to fill the time. At my 2nd hagwon I liked having the freedom to come up with my own lesson and make my own tests.

I would be the only foreign teacher. I would be teaching speaking and writing. The teaching hours are 2-9pm with 5-6 hour long classes per day. You have to come an hour early at one to make lesson plans and prepare for class. They do provide training before you start.

Long classes worry me! I'm scared that I wouldn't be able to stretch the lesson that far! I remember how hard it was for a 75 minute class at my first school. Time passed so slowly and the lessons were short! My last hagwon classes were only 50 minutes and it seemed time passed quicker!

Before I make a decision I would look over the contract really closely and I would have to talk to a teacher that works there. But I think my mind is halfway made up already. I don't think this one is right for me.

My recruiter emailed me to see how the interview went. I told her I don't know if I would be a good fit for the school.

Maybe they will reject me and I won't have to worry about rejecting them!

I'm planning to go back to South Korea...soon

I have decided to go back to Korea. I thought I'd never go back, but never say never. I've been thinking about it ever since November, but now I'm finally announcing it. Now I can just keep adding updates in new blog posts.

In November, I was really frustrated at my job so I posted a status update on Facebook. My friend in Korea saw my post and said I should take her job in March. I got all of my documents together to prepare. I had an interview and got the job, but I turned it down because they didn't offer any benefits. Plus the job was part time for half of the year and housing would be taken out of my pay.

I could have given up then, but my longing for Korea was too strong. My mind was made up. I was going to Korea somehow, some way.  My family thinks I'm crazy and begs me not to go.

I joined a Facebook group for English teachers in South Korea. I posted on the wall that I was looking for a job. Shortly after that a girl contacted me and said that she was leaving her hagwon at the end of April. I started communicating with her, but a week later her school decided they weren't going to hire another teacher to save money.

There's also another reason I want to go to Korea. I met a guy from Seoul on Facebook. We met in a group for Korean men who like foreign women. We have been chatting on Facebook and Kakao since December. We chat a few times a week. I'd like to meet him and see if there could be a connection offline. He seems like a really sweet guy. If things work out between us there will be plenty of posts about us later. (Only basic info)

After 2 failed attempts, I started contacting recruiters. I had to send them my resume, an introduction video, and a picture of myself. One company even asked me to send a full body picture because it would help me get more jobs. (how?) The recruiters told me about some positions. I'm not going to settle so I turn down a lot of jobs. I know I want to be near Seoul and only teach Elementary students. I wouldn't mind if there were some middle school students also.

I saw another post in the English teacher group on Facebook. A girl was leaving her hagwon in Goyang, Korea around the middle of April. I started communicating with her. I sent in my resume and her director liked it. I had a Skype interview on March 25. (waiting to hear back from them)

Another recruiter found me a position teaching Elementary students in Hanam, Korea. She sent my resume and they wanted to interview me. I will have a phone interview with them on March 26th.

On March 25 I had a recruiter who said he had a lot of positions and asked me to send him my resume. I really wasn't looking to go with more recruiters, but I sent it anyway. I have to keep my options open in case these 2 offers fall through. More recruiters=more opportunities.

I could be in Korea in May!! More updates later....

Music Video: Girl Hood "Darling Honey I Love You"

Girl Hood is being branded as the ahjumma (old woman) version of Girl's Generation. The members are married and range in age from 29-36 which is a lot older than most girl groups.

Asian women age very well. I never would have guessed their ages. I wouldn't consider them to be ahjummas though. (But it is common to be called an ahjumma once you are married). I think it would be interested to see a real ahjumma group with perms and visors. Oh my, I would pay to see that!!

Darling Honey I love you is their debut song. This song is about a wife's love for her husband. It's  not your typical kpop song, but I think its nice and sweet. It's good to add something new to the mix.

Debut: 2014
members: 김유정 (36), 왕희 (36), 박수아 (29), 현예은 (31)

Random Fact: Ahjumma means "aunt", but thats now how its commonly used. It is used as a term for married women and anyone who looks to be middle aged or older. For example, you call a woman server in a restaurant as 'ahjumma' instead of using their name (if she is an older lady). Older ahjummas tend to all follow the same fashion trends: permed short hair and big visors.

Translation:

You are my love, you are my love, no matter what anyone says
Such a handsome man, such a handsome man, it’s only you in my eyes
You’re a star, you’re the moon, you’re the honey to my heart
I love you, I love you, I love you

The twinkling stars of the night sky don’t shine as bright as you
I’ve really fallen for you, I’ve gone crazy for you

Darling, honey, what should I call you?
You set a fire in my burning heart
Darling, honey, honey, I don’t know what to do
I like you so much that I’m going crazy

Words that you say
Are a melody to my ears
Lalala lalala
I love you, I love you, I love you

The twinkling stars of the night sky don’t shine as bright as you
I’ve really fallen for you, I’ve gone crazy for you

Darling, honey, what should I call you?
You set a fire in my burning heart
Darling, honey, honey, I don’t know what to do
I like you so much that I’m going crazy

Because of you, my heart is burning again today

My love, you are my one and only
You gave me love in my lonely heart
Darling, honey, honey, I don’t know what to do
I like you so much that I’m going crazy

Boy bands are my favorite!

The only need it needs is English subtitles. Or maybe I should learn more Korean.

Renting an apartment in Seoul: Jeonse (전세)

I don't have any first hand knowledge about renting an apartment. My job has always provided housing for me. I was reading an article that I found to be really interesting. I can't believe apartments in Korea are so expensive. For $290,000 you can buy a nice house in the USA. Koreans pay that much to rent an apartment.
_________________

Read the article herehttp://news.msn.com/world/it-takes-dollar290000-in-cash-to-rent-an-apartment-in-seoul#tscptmf

According to the article, Seoulites spend $290,000 in cash to rent an apartment.

Most Koreans don't pay monthly rent. Korea uses a system called jeonse. Jeonse is also known as "key money". In the Jeonse system, tenants will lend large sums of money to the landlord for a period of time (usually 2 years) instead of paying a monthly rent. Tenants pay a percentage of what the property would be worth. The percentage used to be around 40%-50%, but these days it can be all the way up to 90%. At the end of the term, the money is returned to the tenant.

"The transaction is essentially a loan, with the tenant as the lender, the landlord as the borrower, and the house as the collateral."

Jeonse does come with some risks. Sometimes the loans don't get paid back to the tenant. The tenants are protected. If the landlord defaults and the house is sold, the tenant will get the money back. 10% of landlords could have trouble paying back the deposit to the tenant.

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bnmtroy

Lately I've been digging some Korean Hip Hop. I need to discover more groups!

This is one of my favorite videos so far this year.  The song sounds great also! The retro feel of the video is a good concept. The girls aren't trying to be overly sexy like a lot of the videos these days.
