In one month (March 4) I will be in New York City!!
First class was good. We had a writing class about personal pronouns and elaborating to add more detail. They all did a good job.
We did a writing lesson in my 2nd class. We were talking about verbs that tell about the past and writing a how to paragraph. They did good with the material. The boys were loud as usual. We also did a writing activity from another writing book.
3rd class was the newspaper class. They enjoyed the articles. They were surprised by the pet deer. There is a family that has a deer as a pet. It lives in the house. They liked the clip of the 5 year old drummer. One student wanted to know if the boy was really 5 years old. The 5 year old has never had a lesson and plays really good. We also talked about Universal Studios coming to Korea. I told them I had been to Universal Studios in California and Florida and it was really fun.I will come back to Korea to visit the new Universal Studios. It opens in 2014. We also talked about a rare bird in Afghanistan-the large-billed reed warbler. They thought the bird was small and cute.
4th class was good. We had a writing lesson about writing events in order and a how to paragraph.

Day 413
Wednesday Feb 3
Last night I forgot to prepare for my newspaper class. I thought about it right before I went to bed. I could have stayed up later to finish but it was already 5am. yes I was still up at 5am.
Today I was rushing to finish it before I had class at 2:55pm. I bought some noodles at the store. Then I realized I didn't have a fork. I wasn't going to use chopsticks to try to eat noodles. I went to Home Plus to buy a pack of forks while my noodles were getting ready. You have to let them sit for 4 minutes before adding the sauce. So then during my free time before class I ate and made classwork. Then I knocked over my coke. The lid was off so It went everywhere. I left to teach my class and left the coke on the floor and cleaned it up after class.
Today was newspaper class in my 1st class. Today's topics were: Korean singer opens a bibimbab restaurant, housework robot, San Francisco, and facts about your eyes. I think they enjoyed the articles. They were actually reading along some without me helping them and finding answers on their own. great. We had a good class. We finished a little early and we played hangman with their spelling words. They did a good job.

She said she envies me because I have yellow hair. ha. I've always wanted dark hair. I'd love to have black or dark brown hair. My natural color is a light brown or maybe its dark blond. At least everyone calls me a blond.

My 4th class was another newspaper class. Same topics as the first class. Half of them weren’t paying attention. Some of them weren’t even on the right page. They talk and don’t listen. They are talking about other things while Im up in the front trying to get students to read and repeat. Only one boy does what he should so I gave him 2 stickers. The other kids got none. 2 students asked me if they were good in class. I told them they have to read all the time. They read sometime but weren’t paying attention all of the time and they got out of their seats to pass notes to each other. I had to beg some people to write the answers and you have to stand beside them to make sure they write it down. They don’t even care. I make powerpoint presentations for pictures and the boys are always trying to press escape on my keyboard so I walk right past them and they don’t get to see the picture.

'Korea Be Inspired' Selected as New Tourism Slogan
Korea's tourism attractions will be promoted through a new English slogan, "Korea Be Inspired," the nation's tourism agency said Monday.
The new slogan emphasizes the hope that foreign tourists will gain new inspiration by visiting Korea. The KTO is aiming to attract 8.5 million foreign tourists in 2010.
The KTO has been gathering ideas from its staff members and advertising experts before confirming the final phrase.
This year marks the beginning of the 2010-2012 "Visit Korea Campaign," aimed at generating $10 billion in annual tourism revenue and advancing Korea's stature as a tourism power.
Previously, Korea has used the slogan "Korea Sparkling" in various promotional materials at home and abroad since 2007. However, it had been criticized for lacking identity and relevance to tourism.
The Presidential Council on National Branding, launched in January 2009, raised the need for a more appropriate tourism slogan. Some experts, including Euh Yoon-dae, chairman of the Presidential Council on National Branding, have been critical of the effectiveness of "Korea Sparkling" as a slogan to represent Korea in the world.
Other tourism powers in Asia have used slogans that define the essence of their respective countries, such as "Incredible India," "Uniquely Singapore" and "Malaysia Truly Asia."
The new slogan will be used in promotional videos and advertisements produced by the KTO in the near future.
Korea spent 5 billion won in developing the slogan 'Korea Sparkling' in 2007 through consultation with domestic and foreign experts.
Chosun Ilbo investigates subway beggars
Anyone who spends more than a day travelling on the Seoul subway is familiar with certain varieties of beggar who frequent it - supposed orphans and disabled people, a few people with no legs, but mainly supposedly blind people. Way back in October the Chosun Ilbo badgered a few people its reporters saw begging for money on the subway by claiming to be blind. Its conclusion? Most subway beggars who say they are blind are not blind at all.
On January 14, 50- year-old Mr. Lee got on the subway at Jonggak station, then walked along slowly tapping a white stick and begging for money from passengers.
By walking up and down the train about 10 times, he covers roughly 100 meters. In one hand he carries a cassette player and plays music in order to get the attention of the carriage passengers. It takes about 30 minutes for him to cover the whole train. An average of 10 people will give him money and it totals about 2,000 won ($1.75).
As soon as he alights from the train he walks briskly up the stairs and through the ticket checks. It is a complete contrast to the uneasy way he walked along the carriages.
A Chosun journalist followed Mr. Lee and asked him some questions.
As expected, he was not really blind. Back in 2005 he operated a small paper cup selling company, but his business failed and his wife divorced him. He now lives alone. “ I feel bad about what I do now. I feel so bad that I can’t do anything other than beg. I feel so sorry for my family.” He has been begging on subways for about two years.
There are few unlike Mr. Lee.
Last month from 10 o’clock to 6 o’clock the journalist met five blind people begging on trains. Of these five (including Mr. Lee) only one person was genuine.
Seoul Metro officials are now trying to take control of the situation. Metro officials stated that they would only take action against the most obvious frauds because the genuinely blind people cannot help begging. That is a government problem.
Seoul Metro has always tried to regulate not just begging but trading of small goods on their trains but it has never really been effective. It is very easy for them to simply move to a different train and continue. The Metro workers have never filed a police report about the problem. However, they will take action against anyone using too much pressure against passengers.
Is there a wealthy route?
Some beggars have ‘know how’ and stick to particular lines of the subway.
It depends on the day, time, and subway line. Mr. Lee claims that weekday mornings are the worst as there are so many people commuting that it is tiresome. The best times are weekday afternoons and weekend mornings on lines 1, 3 and 4. They can easily weave through passengers then. Mr. Lee usually travels on the weekend morning subway, then changes from line 1 to line 3 in the afternoon. That way he can get more money than usual weekday journeys. Many others begging prefer the line 4 train to the horse racing track.
There are also high class people to beg from.
It is so tiring to get lots of money that it is normal to get between 10,000 and 20,000 ($17.50) won per day and live hand to mouth. On line 1, 48-year-old Mr. Park (who is genuinely blind) was begging with his 44-year-old wife Mrs. Seo holding his arm. After a short time they stopped to count the money. They had about 6,000 won ($5.25).

Korea spends more money on pornography than any other country, according to BBC magazine Focus. The magazine analyzed 35 countries in the world based on the seven deadly sins: lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy and pride. The top 10 countries in the respective fields were listed.
The level of lust was calculated based on the amount of money spent on pornography per capita. What it means by pornography, and what kind of data was used for the analysis remain unclear. Korea was followed by Japan, Australia and Finland.
Korea ranked sixth in gluttony, which was topped by the United States, followed by Canada, Australia, Japan and the United Kingdom. "We gauged excessive sexual thoughts for each nation using the average annual income per capita from the porn industry, divided by the price of a Big Mac hamburger -- a measure of the cost of living in that nation. This gives an indication of the amount spent on porn per person," the magazine wrote.
Averaging the scores each country received in seven fields, the magazine made up an overall ranking. Korea earned 10 points for being the top finisher in lust, and five points for being in sixth place for gluttony. With the total, Korea was the eighth most sinful country in the world. This afternoon I noticed that one of my books was missing. I was looking everywhere. I didn't know where it could be. I know I didn't take it any further than the classroom or the teacher's lounge. Close to class time I told the Korean teacher that I was missing a book. Then she went and got it. A parent wanted to look at it. But no one was going to even let me know that they took my book so I'm frantically searching for it.
I thought my buddy was back. Maybe he was filling in for one day. Yesterday one of the assistants was absent and my buddy was there. Today the other assistant was back.
I had a new student in my first class. 2 of my students came in late. One came in during the first lesson and the other came in after the first lesson. Today's topics were "my interests" and "do you want to grow up soon?". One of the students answers made me want to laugh but I didnt laugh. We were talking about our hobbies. Most of the hobbies were listening to music, reading books and playing computer games. One girl's answer was "My hobbies are playing with myself." We had a good lesson and then they had free time.
My 2nd class was a little better than normal. The 2 chatty boys finally sat apart from each other. 3 of the boys still tried to be loud in class. One of the chatty boys actually was telling people to be quiet. Today's lesson was about a boy who thought his parents loved his little sister more than him. Near the end of class everyone actually was quiet and participating. It was the best they had ever been.
Newspaper class was actually good today. Everyone was behaving, listening, reading, and answering the questions. I was surprised. I gave everyone a sticker for a reward. I dont normally give out the stickers in that class because they wont be quiet.
Today's topics were: a rare bird in Afghanistan, Universal Studios opening in Korean in 2014, a pet deer, and an amazing little drummer. I want to go back to Korea in 2014 to see the new Universal Studios. The article said it will be the largest theme park in the world and it will be bigger than all of the universal studios combined. I've been to Universal Studios in California and Florida and I really enjoyed it.
My last class was good. We went over 2 lessons: Speeding and In an emergency. We finished early and they had free time.

Korean men discover makeup
Nam Won-chul, a 24-year-old university student, was shocked when he spotted hair wax, a tube of foaming cleanser, powder compact and a hand mirror in his friend's bag.
"He just nonchalantly said that now men need to take care of their own looks too," Nam said.
Though it might yet come as a surprise to some people, more and more men are using makeup. They enjoy not only basic skin care like skin lotion and lip balm but full makeup from creamy foundation bases to smoky eyeliners.
Following the trend, makeup salons for men are gaining popularity.
Loft:D, a makeup studio in Seogyo-dong, western Seoul, which opened last year, is a pioneer in the domain.
"Men are interested in looking good, too. I thought men also had the right to enjoy their life, looking good with cool makeup on," said Kim Doo-ha, director of Loft:D.
For men who are not yet familiar with makeup, the shop prepared a menu which customers can select from, as if choosing a drink at a cafe. The menu, which will continuously be updated, currently has three types of makeup for men - "Basic," "Soft Smoky" and "Real Smoky."
"Basic" simply covers up the blemishes, while "Soft Smoky" adds some accent to the eyes with brown underlines. To get an idea of "Real Smoky," well, think of Big Bang member T.O.P.'s eyes.
But if you are still not so sure which one to get, just inform the makeup artist about the occasion.
"I just tell the artist where I'm headed, for example the club or some important photo shoot, and she fixes me up with the most natural look that fits into the occasion. I usually ask for stronger looks when I'm going clubbing, which makes me feel like I'm dressing up for Halloween," said Shin, 25, a regular customer who visited the shop last Tuesday.
"I spent many years in Japan where it is natural for guys to shape their eyebrows, so putting on some makeup is not weird for me at all. I think men putting on makeup will soon be settled as a culture in Korea, just like how men getting perms did."
Typical male customers to the salons include performers, lecturers, salesmen, those who have important interviews or even blind dates coming up.
"They have specific demands, like 'I want to cover up these blemishes' or 'please lighten up the dark circles under my eyes,'" said Kim.
"Wearing makeup must add confidence to men, like it does to women. A lecturer told me that he gave a far better speech when he wore makeup," Kim added.
Now the shop has expanded its services to women, who get to choose from nine different options.
Women make up about 60 to 70 percent of Loft:D's customers but there are some who bring - or drag - their boyfriends with them. They receive a unique service named the "Couple Makeup Event."
The service includes makeup service for the couple, drinks, snacks and two hours in a private photo studio. A professional photographer takes pictures of the couple once the makeover is finished and the couple can take home a small album.
"Your skin looks so smooth!" a couple exclaimed to each other after getting the makeover. They had stopped by on their way to enjoy some wine at a classic bar nearby.
"He used to look like this back in high school. It would be weird if he says he wants to wear makeup like this everyday, but looking at him now, I'm thinking some more skin treatment on him would be nice," said one satisfied girlfriend, 24-year-old Kim Jwa-young.

Day 411
Monday Feb 1
I got up early to go to the dentist. I got there around 10:10 for my 10:30 appt. They took me right back. The assistant was going to take off my temporary crown but it was not there. Oh my. Maybe it fell out and I swallowed it! I never felt it come off in my mouth and I never felt it fall out of my mouth. Then I got my crown. I set up another appointment for feb 11 to start the next root canal. After my root canal is done I will have a cleaning. The front desk person was asking me if I would be interested in getting my teeth whitened. She said its only 300,000 won. Wow. I think I might do it because that’s less than 300 dollars. I wont find it that cheap in America.
When I got home, I went to emart to get swiffer refills. They are expensive. 9,000 won for 16 dry cloths and 9,000 won for 12 wet cloths. I used my 5,000 gift certif. so I saved some.
My Monday class is going to be from 2-2:45 so I’ll start working as soon as I get here. I started 10 mins late today because she told me about 5 after 2. We had a good class today. They took a test. 2 of them did good 90/100. The other one made a 20. I even wrote a hint on the board, but that didn’t help. I told them that each word had either a oy or oi in it. We had a good class and learned a new set of words. The girl liked my nametag. She said it was pretty.
After class I had a pleasant surprise. The old teacher assistant is back. He was the one that always talked to me. It was good to see him again. He left at the end of September and I hadn't seen him since. We talked to each other briefly. Its really hard to talk to him though. He doesn't understand English or speak English very well. He was asking me what I thought about Lady Gaga. I like her music but I think her fashion is crazy. He said he likes her music but doesn't like her actions.
First class was okay. One of my students started getting sick in class.He kept holding to his stomach and they called the teacher over. And she took him out of class.Today we talked about lifeguards and speeding.Good class. They begged to hurry so could have free time.
The student who was sick was laying in the other classroom across 3 chairs. He was still in there when I came to teach that class and then he left with the Korean teacher. One of my students was so excited to get the newspaper quiz and excited about a 30. Today's lesson was about “my parents love my sister more than me”. Then we read an article and answered questions. Couldn’t get one student to read and answer the questions properly.
My last class was back to being on their worst behavior. We finished the unit and reviewed for the test. I was going to be nice and give them time to study before the test but they didn’t want to study so we took the test. They were constantly calling out answers to each other. I kept telling them to stop but it didn’t help. At first they were all trying to put their books in their laps so they could cheat but I made them put their books on a chair or the floor. One boy opened his book during the test. I have to watch these students.
I finished watching "Sang Doo! Let's Go To School". All 16 episodes. It was very sad most of the time.
I got up early to go to the dentist. I got there around 10:10 for my 10:30 appt. They took me right back. The assistant was going to take off my temporary crown but it was not there. Oh my. Maybe it fell out and I swallowed it! I never felt it come off in my mouth and I never felt it fall out of my mouth. Then I got my crown. I set up another appointment for feb 11 to start the next root canal. After my root canal is done I will have a cleaning. The front desk person was asking me if I would be interested in getting my teeth whitened. She said its only 300,000 won. Wow. I think I might do it because that’s less than 300 dollars. I wont find it that cheap in America.
