Konglish: Cell Phone

Konglish is the use of English words in a Korean context.

Todays Konglish word is 핸드폰.


This is the Konglish word for cell phone.


핸드=Hand

폰=phone

These are not translations. These are just English words used in Korean.


Pronunciation: Hand-duh-pon


(pronounce the pon with the same vowel sound as bone)

It seems like almost everyone has a cell phone in Korea.The majority of my elementary students had one. Some of them were as young as 7 years old.


Korean cell phones use CMDA.


There are only 3 cell phone providers in Korea:



  • KT (Korea Telecom)
  • SKT (SK Telecom)
  • LG U+
