Korean Presidential TV Ads

I wonder if Koreans ever have the ads where they bash the other candidate like we do in the USA. Anyway these ads look very tame. I wish I could understand what they said. I should have studied Korean harder!

There are now 2 candidates: Park Geun Hye and Moon Jae In.

South Korea welcomed their 10 millionth visitor

Read the story here: http://nwww.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20121121000877

South Korea welcomed their 10 millionth visitor in 2012 on November 21. This is the first time Korea had 10 million visitors in a single year. They hope to have 11.3 million visitors by the end of the year.

South Korea's new goal is to have 20 million visitors by 2020.

70% of visitors come to Seoul. They want to expand travel programs so more people will visit other areas of the country.

40% of visitors return to Korea for another visit.

___________________________

I definitely recommend South Korea as a great travel destination. It's probably the only country that I will revisit since international travel is so expensive. Korea will always hold a special place in my heart.

South Korea is a very safe place. I never worried about my safety. They have a low crime rate and guns are illegal. The funny thing is that you rarely see the police out and about. When there is a protest they come out by the hundreds in tour buses.

Forget about personal space. Its not a concept in Korea. If you go to one of the bigger cities like Seoul it will be crowded and they will bump into you and keep going. Don't expect anyone to say "sorry". If you get on the subway during rush hour expect to be packed like sardines!! Watch out for scooters on the sidewalk!

South Korea is a mixture of modern and traditional. They have a lot of modern buildings and skyscrapers, but there are a lot of traditional buildings from the past.

There are so many things to do! Most of the tourist attractions are very cheap also. Most of the palaces only cost 1000 won which is about $1.00. The zoo only cost 3000 won which is about $3.00. You can go to a horse race for about $1.00. The amusement parks are more expensive, but worth the visit.

If you want some suggestions visit my "Things to Do and See" label on the left hand side of my blog. Almost all of my attractions were in Seoul.

There are a lot of shopping districts where you can pick up nice souvenirs.

Transportation is cheap and efficient! The subway system is very easy to navigate.

The food is great and not very expensive. If you are shy about trying new food there are fast food restaurants such as McDonalds, Burger King, and KFC.

Holidays on the 14th of each month...

There is an unofficial holiday on the 14th of every month in South Korea. These holidays are mostly celebrated by couples.

Here are all the holidays which fall on the 14th of the month:

January 14: Diary Day

  • Couples exchange blank diaries so they can share what happened during the year.

February 14th: Valentine's Day
  • Valentine's day is celebrated differently in South Korea. The women are give gifts to men that they are dating or interested in.

March 14th: White Day
  • This is when the men reciprocate for Valentine's day. The men give gifts to women.

April 14th: Black Day
  • This would be "singles awareness day". The singles get together and eat black noodles (jjangjangmyeon).

May 14th: Rose Day
  • On this day couples exchange roses.

June 14th: Kiss Day
  • I think you can guess what happens on this day :)

July 14th: Silver Day
  • Exchange silver accessories on this day.

August 14th: Green Day
  • Couples get out and enjoy nature while singles drown their sorrows by drinking a lot of soju.

September 14th: Photo Day
  • Couples take pictures together in a romantic setting and place the photo somewhere they can look at it.

October 14th: Wine Day
  • Couples get together and drink wine.

November 14th: Movie Day
  • This is a day when couples go to the movies together.

December 14th: Hug Day
  • This is a day to give hugs.

Valentine's Day, White Day and Black Day are the most popular holidays among couples and singles.

I don't know how popular the other "holidays" are because I never really heard anyone mention any of them to me.They weren't promoted like Valentine's Day and White Day. Around those days you see advertisements and special displays of gifts all over the place.
